Jane Austen: an author of sharp intellect and subtle humor:
Few authors in literary history have had the ability to craft dialogue and bring characters to life as elegantly, ironically and astutely as British author Jane Austen. Her sheltered upbringing in an idyllic rural home provided Austen with an ideal setting for her novels, which chiefly play out in the social microcosm of England’s southern counties – in a world of ballrooms, marriage schemes and traditional social conventions. Behind the seeming lightness of her narratives lies a profound work that retains its fascination for readers today. Jane Austen analysed the landed gentry of her time with a keen eye, turning her observations into wonderful stories. Her father, a respected clergyman in the county of Hampshire, laid the foundations for her writing. Unusually for the time – Jane Austen was born in 1775 – he supported his daughter’s intellectual ambitions and encouraged her to write. This led to the birth of such famous novels as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma. These multi-layered literary gems go far beyond the genre of the social novel. Montblanc has created the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen to celebrate one of English literature’s most famous authors.
